Fort Whipple officially became Prescott in 1864. Prescott twice served as the Arizona Territorial Capital until Phoenix took that title in 1889. Virgil Earp and Doc Holiday (of the Gunfight at OK Corral fame) both lived here prior to the gunfight. With a population of over 40,000, Prescott now serves as the Yavapai county seat.
